Primary Attainment Overview
Purpose
The Primary Attainment Overview report gives you a snapshot of Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 attainment for the current Assessment Period using Summative Assessment data for the various Subjects that pupils are studying across your Trust. Use this report to view the attainment of different groups of pupils and compare the differences in performance within the different pupil Groups. Using this knowledge, you can determine where certain Groups of pupils could benefit from support interventions, or where potential opportunities to learn from best practice exist, both of which could have a positive impact on overall attainment across your Trust.
When you load the report, you are presented with a chart and table that details which pupils are achieving Below, At or Above ARE. The default view shows pupil attainment (using a Simple Age Related Expectations view) for the Combined (RWM) Subject By School. You can change the Subject and the Group as needed to analyse individual Subject attainment for different Groups of pupils. The other Groups available for selection are By Year, By Gender, By Disadvantaged, By SEN, and By Ethnicity. If all Schools within your Trust are using the same Summative Assessment model for recording ARE, for example, one that is more detailed than the default Below, At or Above ARE (referred to as Simple) you can choose to use this to display attainment with a greater level of granularity (referred to as School).
Information: Pupils with missing assessment data are not included in calculations. Numerical counts or percentage calculations relating to pupil numbers are undertaken using the number of pupils that have assessment records with entries in them (not the total number of pupils). For example, if you have 50 pupils, but only 46 pupils have assessment records, any pupil counts will be based on the set of 46 pupils with assessment records, not the total of 50. This too will be the case for percentages which, in this example, would be calculated based on a set size of 46, and not the total number of 50 pupils.
Information: The Primary Attainment Overview report is only available for those users who are part of an establishment that comprises multiple schools in Sonar Tracker (for example, a Multi Academy Trust) and have the appropriate permission associated with their User ID to access Sonar Multi-School content.
Report View
Elements
Field Name | Description |
---|---|
Last Updated | The date when the data you are viewing was last updated. |
Term / Academic Year | The Term (for example, Spring) and Academic Year (for example, 2023/2024) for which the data is being displayed. |
Group | Attainment details, based on summative pupil assessment for the selected Group. The Group details are sorted in alphabetical order within the tabular view, with All Pupils at the top of the list. All Pupils refers to the attainment of all pupils across your Trust, who have assessment data and are included within the calculations in the report. Pupils with missing assessment data are not included in the report. |
Attainment Breakdown | The Attainment Breakdown shows pupil achievement for the selected Subject and Group, based on the current Assessment Period. The ARE assessment categories are presented in both a chart and a table. By default attainment is broken down into three categories: Below, At and Above (but may differ based on how your Trust chooses to report attainment). In the chart view, both the number of pupils and a percentage are presented for each attainment category. Any pupil without assessment data is not included for the percentage calculation. Within the chart view, different colours are used for the three assessment categories:
In the table view, the number of pupils assessed at Below, At or Above is present in three columns. When calculating a Combined (RWM) measure for a pupil, the lowest ARE across the three subjects (Reading, Writing and Mathematics) determines the overall Summative Assessment:
Information: If all Schools within your Trust are using the same Summative Assessment Model for recording ARE, for example, one that is more detailed than using the default Below, At or Above ARE (referred to as Simple) you can choose to use this to display attainment with a greater level of granularity. Select School in the Age Related Expectations control to do this. If there is any inconsistency in the Summative Assessment Model used across the different schools within your multi-school environment (even if only one school uses different Summative Codes), Simple will be used and you will not be able to select School. |
% At and Above - All Pupils | The percentage of pupils across your multi-school environment, whose Summative Assessment for the selected Subject, for the current Assessment Period is either At or Above ARE, calculated as follows: Subject % At and Above across the Trust = Information: The percentage is calculated only based on those pupils who have assessment data. Any pupils without assessment data are not included in the calculation. |
% At and Above - Group | The percentage of pupils in the School, whose Summative Assessment for the selected Subject and Group, for the current Assessment Period is either At or Above ARE, calculated as follows: Subject % At and Above for the Group = Information: The percentage is calculated only based on those pupils who have assessment data. Any pupils without assessment data are not included in the calculation. |
Total Pupils | The total number of pupils included in the Group. |
Controls

---|---|
By School | Select to view your Trust's Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupil attainment data By School (the default view). Using this view you can compare pupil attainment within the individual Schools over time, against different Schools and against your Trust average. Analyse the data in this chart and table to determine which Schools are performing well overtime, which are performing better / to a lower standard than others, and which may require support to improve attainment. Using this knowledge, as appropriate you can build on the best practices of the better performing school (or schools), to try to enhance performance of those schools that are not performing as well. |
By Year Group | Select to view your Trust's Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupil attainment data by Year Group. Using this view you can compare how pupils within individual Year Groups are performing over time, against each other and against your Trust average. Analyse the data in this chart to determine which Year Groups are performing well over time, which are performing better / to a lower standard than the others at different points and overall, and which may require support to improve attainment. |
By Gender | Select to view your Trust's Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupil attainment data by Gender. Using this view you can compare how Female pupils and Males pupils are performing over time, against each other and against your Trust average (Trust Average) regardless of a pupil's Gender. Analyse the data in this chart to determine how pupils of a certain Gender are performing overtime, which Gender is performing best / to a lower standard than the other, and which may require support to improve attainment. |
By SEN | Select to view your Trust's Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupil attainment data based on whether pupil's are categorised as having an SEN or Not SEN. Using this view you can compare how those that are / aren't categorised as SEN are performing over time, against each other and against your Trust average (Trust Average) regardless of whether a pupil is categorised as having a special educational need or not. Analyse the data in this chart to determine how pupils categorise as SEN or Not SEN are performing overtime, which Group is performing best / to a lower standard than the other, and which may require support to improve attainment. |
By Disadvantaged | Select to view your Trust's Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupil attainment data based on whether pupil's are categorised as Disadvantaged or Not Disadvantaged. Using this view you can compare how those that are / aren't categorised as Disadvantaged are performing over time, against each other and against your Trust average (Trust Average) regardless of whether a pupil is Disadvantaged or not.
