Phonics Statutory Data Eligibility Rules
The following rule apply to determining which pupils are include in the calculations above using their data stored in Sonar Tracker.
Cohort
Pupils take the Phonics Check in Year One. Where a pupil does not achieve a Pass, they are able to re-take the test in Year Two. Pupils in Year One and Year Two of the Current Academic Year are considered in this cohort.
- Year One pupils will only have a result in the Year One check.
- Year Two pupils will only have a result in the Year Two check if they did not achieve a pass (normally 32 marks) in Year One.
Eligible Pupils
- For Phonics Year One any Year One cohort figure should be calculated on the number of Year One pupils (not leavers) who have any assessment data (numerical or alphabetical) recorded in Sonar Tracker for the Phonics Check in Year One.
- For Phonics Year Two (retakes) any Year Two cohort figure should be calculated on the number of Year Two pupils (not leavers) who have any assessment data (numerical or alphabetical) recorded in Sonar Tracker for the Phonics Check in Year Two.
- For Phonics End of KS1 any Year Two cohort figure should be calculated on the number of Year Two pupils (not leavers) who have any assessment (numerical or alphabetical) recorded in Sonar Tracker for the Phonics Check in Year One, plus any pupils who have a result recorded in Sonar Tracker for the Phonics Check in Year Two. If a pupil has a result recorded in both years, then the Year Two result should be counted.
Not Eligible Pupils
Year One:
- A Year One pupil with no assessment result recorded for Year One Phonics.
Year Two:
- A Year Two pupil with no result in the Year Two check recorded, but who achieved a pass last academic year in Year One.
- A Year Two pupil with no result in the Year Two check recorded, but who had a result last academic in Year One that was not a pass.
- A Year Two pupil with no result in the Year Two check recorded and no result in last academic year’s Year One test.
Example
There are 30 pupils (not Leavers) in Year One and 30 pupils (not Leavers) in Year Two in Sonar Tracker:
- 29 Year One pupils have a result in Year One Phonics.
- 1 Year One pupil has no result in Year One Phonics.
- 8 Year Two pupils have a result in Year Two Phonics.
- 20 Year Two pupils have no result in Year Two Phonics and a standard pass in Year One Phonics.
- 1 Year Two pupil has no result in Year Two Phonics and a result of 15 in their Year One Phonics.
- 1 Year Two pupil has no result in either Year One or Year Two Phonics.
Calculation
- For Phonics Year One the denominator is 29.
- For Phonics Year Two (retakes) the denominator is 8.
- For Phonics End of KS1 (Year Two combined with those who passed when they were in Year One) the denominator is 29. This is because it includes the 20 pupils who had passed the previous academic year and the 8 pupils who retook this academic year. It does not include the pupil with no result in either Year One or Year Two).

- Total number of eligible pupils = 29
- Total number of ineligible pupils = 1
